Michelia champaca is a tree with thin leathery leaves that are lanceolate-ovate or lanceolate-elongate, with stipule scars extending above the middle of the petiole. The flowers are orange-yellow and extremely fragrant; the fruit is an ovoid-elongate follicle. The flowering period is from September to December, and the fruiting period is from November to March of the following year. It prefers sunny conditions and warm, humid environments. It thrives in acidic soil, does not tolerate alkaline soil, is not drought-resistant, dislikes excessive humidity, especially waterlogging, and is not cold-resistant. It has poor resistance to smoke. The shape of the Michelia champaca tree is graceful and beautiful, and its flowers are more fragrant than those of white Michelia, making it a famous woody ornamental plant and one of the "Five Trees and Six Flowers" in Buddhism. It is often planted in gardens or courtyards in southern regions, and is usually grown as a potted plant in the north. The flowers and leaves are raw materials for essential oils and are also used in flower baskets, bouquets, corsages, and hair decorations. The wood is of good quality and can be used for shipbuilding. Michelia champaca also has certain medicinal functions, with a bitter and cool nature. The roots are used to remove wind-dampness and benefit the throat, for风湿 bone pain; the fruit is good for the stomach and relieves pain, used for indigestion and stomach pain.
