Dividing orchids is actually not difficult, as long as you are careful. The key is to master the timing of dividing orchids. In this article, we will first talk about the timing and then refer to the division diagrams of other orchid enthusiasts for your reference.

1. Timing for dividing orchids:

When the potting material in the orchid pot has aged too much or there are too many seedlings without space for growth, it is necessary to divide or repot them. Generally speaking, the most suitable time for division is in spring and autumn when the orchids are mature and the damage rate can be minimized. In the first half of the year, it is best to do it from Chunfen (Spring Equinox) to Guyu (Grain Rain), when the flowering period is over, and the leaf buds have not germinated yet, which is less likely to suffer from frost damage and is a good time to repot. In the second half of the year, it is best to do it from Qiufen (Autumn Equinox) to Shuangjiang (Frost's Descent), when orchids will enter a dormant state. Repotting at this time will have less impact on the growth of orchids. After a winter of recuperation and nutrient accumulation, they can bloom and germinate well in the spring. Mastering the timing of dividing and propagating orchids is an important part of orchid care.

1. Turn the pot (a pot of spring orchid that has been cultivated for many years)

2. Prepare tools (medical scissors/surgical knife/disinfecting alcohol lamp). If conditions do not allow, other sharp tools can also be used, such as a blade.

3. Inspect (carefully observe the seedling structure and find the best division point)

4. Comb the roots (after selecting the division point, comb the roots first, separate the intertwined roots carefully and slowly to reduce root breakage)

5. Twist (hold the roots with both hands, twist gently to find the connection point; do not roughly pull the rhizome with your hands as it can easily damage the new buds and leaves)

6. Cut (cut decisively at the targeted position. Note: every time you cut, a plant is definitely separated. Do not make the second cut until you see it divided into two; the result of cutting carelessly is to make the plant look破碎.)

7. Trim (cut off the withered feet, as they are places where dirt accumulates)

8. Rinse (rinse clean with running water)

9. Subdivide (for plants that need to be subdivided, find another suitable connection point again, generally 3-4 seedlings per plant, which causes less damage and is easier to recover)

10. Cut (use a surgical knife to cut carefully, so that the wound is small and easy to heal. Note: the surgical blade should be changed for each pot to prevent the spread of viruses.)

11. Apply medicine (treat all separated wounds with fungicides. I use "Baituo" original powder directly applied to the wound, which can effectively prevent stem rot in summer)

Finish (after the orchid plants are separated, let them sit for one day, wait for the roots to soften and the wounds to slightly shrink before potting. Note: Do not water within 3 days after potting to allow the wounds to heal and prevent diseases caused by repotting.)
