Mesembryanthemum is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant of the Mesembryanthemum genus, growing up to 30 cm tall. The flowers are solitary at the branch tips; the bracts are leaf-like and opposite; the calyx is deeply divided into 5 lobes, which are unequal in size; the petals are numerous, ranging from purple-red to white; the stamens are numerous with fused bases. The fruit is a fleshy capsule, star-shaped with 5 valves; there are many seeds. The flowering period is in spring or late summer to early autumn. Native to Southern Africa. Cultivated in China for ornamental purposes.
