Many friends say pruning, yes, pruning is important, but fertilizing is even more crucial. Only with adequate fertilizer and water, can roses bloom more beautifully in autumn. So, what are the specific precautions for rose maintenance in autumn? You will understand after reading this.
Key Points of Rose Management in Autumn
After entering autumn, the first management for roses should be top-dressing. Whether it's a healthy rose seedling or a weak one, top-dressing should be done promptly after autumn, because after a long period of no fertilizing in summer, roses are actually quite deficient in nutrients. If top-dressing is not done in time, it will be difficult to see beautiful autumn flowers. For some weak seedlings, sprouting also requires a lot of nutrients.
1. -- Top-Dressing After Entering Autumn --
Top-dressing roses is the first thing to do when autumn arrives. In the northern regions, it is no longer hot, and pruning and top-dressing can be done together. In the central regions, it is still quite hot, and it's not a good time to prune roses yet, but top-dressing can be done in advance.
For top-dressing, fermented organic fertilizer should be used. If it's a potted rose, a combination of organic fertilizer and a moderate amount of slow-release fertilizer can be used to enhance the effect. The nutrient release of fermented organic fertilizer and slow-release fertilizer is gentle and long-lasting. Top-dressing first can cause the rose buds to swell, and after pruning, the roses will sprout quickly. After pruning, water-soluble fertilizer should be used.

Usually at the end of August (for southern regions, at the end of September), we will give roses a complete pruning to make the shape of the potted roses more perfect and also stimulate the growth of new branches and more flower buds. For healthy plants, when pruning, you can cut off 1/3 of the whole plant, then remove dense branches and weak ones, and retain more leaves for photosynthesis.

The prevention and treatment of diseases and pests accompany the entire growth period of roses. With the increase of rainfall in autumn, diseases and pests are particularly common, such as black spot disease, thrips, and caterpillars.
If prevention is not done well in summer, by autumn, the leaves of roses are often few due to the invasion of black spot disease. Even if there was prevention in summer, autumn is still necessary to prevent black spot disease.
Besides diseases, pests also find roses in summer. The most common is the rose thrips, which causes the leaves to become deformed, as well as rose sawflies, leaf-cutting bees, and butterfly larvae that specifically feed on leaves. Sometimes there are also cotton bollworms that feed on rose flower buds, so a comprehensive pest control should also be done after entering autumn.
After pruning, you can spray the roses with a mixture of zinc omadine, myclobutanil, dinotefuran, and lambda-cyhalothrin. Regular use of pesticides is also necessary in autumn.
