The website introduces you to the little knowledge about orchids, a member of the Orchidaceae family. Find out how to make orchid leaves green and glossy! Let's take a look together!
It is said that flowers are for the eyes for a few days, but leaves are for appreciation for years. The brightness, cleanliness, and integrity of orchid leaves are not only a standard for measuring the health of orchids but also a testament to the cultivation skills of orchid enthusiasts. Many orchid lovers grow orchids that seem healthy and grow normally, but their leaves are rough, lackluster, and spiritless, often stained with water, medicine, dust, and other serious pollutants. Such orchid seedlings, even if they are expensive and famous varieties, are hard to be displayed in elegant places! They lose the elegance of orchids and have a low appearance! At the request of orchid enthusiasts, I will introduce some tips for your reference. Please correct any mistakes!
Here are a few simple explanations:
1. The water sprayed on the leaves should be clean and contain few impurities (from my experience, using tap water for a long time will leave stains; the solution is to add an appropriate amount of edible white vinegar to the tap water, let it sit for two days or more, and gently take the clear liquid on the surface). You can also use a TDS meter to test the water quality (the conductivity value of dissolved substances in water). The lower the number, the purer the water! The original value of tap water is between 50 and 300.
2. Do not use too much fungicide on the leaves. Generally, the residue of the medicine lasts more than 15-20 days. Do not reuse pesticides during the interval. If an orchid is infected with a disease, it must be isolated and managed separately. After the orchid is cured, it can be moved back to the orchid room for normal management. It is recommended to use water-based fungicides as much as possible.
3. Increase the relative humidity of the orchid room to prevent damage to the leaves from dry, hot, or strong winds. If growing orchids on a rooftop or balcony, increase the corresponding humidifying equipment for microclimate intervention to maintain the air humidity at around 70%-80%.
4. Seal the orchid room to reduce the amount of dust entering and polluting the leaves. If conditions allow, use a wet curtain to filter the dirty air entering from the outside, keeping the orchid room air moist and fresh! This is beneficial for gas exchange and orchid growth!
5. It is recommended to use a specialized leaf fertilizer for ornamental plants containing comprehensive micro-fertilizers, which dissolves quickly, absorbs well, leaves no residue, and does not cause leaf pollution. Large elements such as urea and potassium phosphate are best used for potting. If foliar application is needed, it should not be excessive or too frequent. The use of large elements on the leaves should not exceed twelve times a year, which means at most once a month, including the growing and dormant periods!
6. Regularly rinse the orchids with a lot of water to clean the leaves and prevent the accumulation of harmful substances and impurities from medicine and inorganic salt stains! After each rinse, make sure to ventilate immediately to dry the water in the leaf axils to prevent rotting hearts, especially during the germination period!
