The dahlia is a perennial herb with huge cylindrical tubers. The plant is about 1.5 meters tall, with opposite leaves that are pinnately compound. The capitulum is large, with a long peduncle that often droops, the ray florets are white, red, or purple, usually ovate; the achenes are oblong, black, and flat; the flowering period is from June to December, and the fruiting period is from September to October.
