How to Graft Osmanthus in Spring
Choosing the Best Time for Grafting
Temperature and Humidity Double Control Standards
The period from mid-March, when the average daily temperature stabilizes between 18-22°C, is most suitable. At this time, the sap starts to flow but the new buds have not fully germinated yet. Stop watering three days before grafting to maintain the moisture content of the rootstock cambium at around 40%.
Four Key Steps in the Operation Process
Rootstock Preprocessing Specifications
Select 2-year-old ligustrum or privet as the rootstock, make a 30-degree diagonal cut 5-7cm away from the base, reaching 1/3 of the xylem. Retain 3-4 main branches and cut off all the lateral branches.
Scion Cutting Techniques
Take a semi-woody branch of osmanthus from the current year, retain 2 pairs of bud eyes, and cut the bottom into a 4cm楔形. The cutting surface should be smooth and even to avoid burrs that affect the fitting.
Wedging and Fixation Operation
Insert the楔形 end of the scion into the rootstock cut, ensuring that the cambium layers are completely aligned. Wrap with 0.04mm agricultural film tape from bottom to top, with the tightness allowing the scion to rotate without moving.
Subsequent Maintenance Management
Use a transparent plastic bag to maintain humidity and gradually ventilate after 15 days. Remove the binding tape when the new shoots grow to 15cm, and promptly remove the suckers from the rootstock. Apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer monthly to promote callus healing at the grafting site.
Criteria for Successful Grafting
The scion remains fresh and green for over 20 days is considered to have survived, and after 45 days, the new shoots become lignified and can be transplanted. Note that a distinct callus will form at the grafting site, indicating smooth nutrient transport.
By accurately grasping the phenological period, standardizing the operation process, and scientific maintenance, osmanthus grafting can form flower buds in the same year. It is recommended to prepare 30% spare scions for actual operations. If there is continuous rain, the operation should be postponed to ensure the best propagation results.
