The cultivation method of Echeveria peacockii subsessilis

A plant knowledge, introducing the topics related to the succulent plant Echeveria peacockii subsessilis, its cultivation method. Let's get to know it together.

Echeveria peacockii subsessilis, belonging to the family Crassulaceae and the genus Echeveria, is also known as Blue Stone莲花. It is a small to medium-sized variety with a short stem that gradually extends and forms an old trunk with time. The leaves are densely arranged in a rosette shape, with a diameter that is not too large. The leaves of Echeveria peacockii are spoon-shaped, with smooth edges and slight wrinkles on both sides of the leaf tip, having a pointed tip. The leaf color is blue. Under strong light, large day-night temperature differences, or low temperatures in winter, the leaf edges may turn slightly pink, while under weak light, the leaf color is light pink-blue. The leaf surface is covered with a fine white powder, and the old leaves become smooth after the white powder falls off. Echeveria peacockii has a paniculate inflorescence, with bell-shaped flowers that are yellow-red.

Echeveria peacockii needs sufficient sunlight to make the leaf color vibrant and the plant more compact and beautiful, with thick leaves. Insufficient sunlight results in light leaf color, loose leaf arrangement, elongated leaves, and thin leaves. As a small to medium-sized plant, Echeveria peacockii can be repotted every few years depending on its growth state. The pot diameter can be 1 to 2 inches larger than the plant diameter to promote growth. The soil should be completely dry before watering, and slow-release fertilizer can be applied.

Propagation is done through leaf insertion and cutting the top, as well as by sowing. Cutting the top can be done throughout the year, and thick leaves should be selected for insertion. However, leaf insertion is slower, and the author usually propagates by cutting the top.

Although the plant is kept in a sunroom, it is moved to bright scattered light and gradually watered less when the temperature exceeds 35 degrees. During the entire summer dormancy period, it receives little or no water. When the temperature drops in mid-September, watering is gradually resumed. Echeveria peacockii can grow normally in the summer under the conditions of the sunroom, with not very obvious dormancy. However, water should not be allowed to enter the leaf heart in summer, as it can cause the plant to die. During the growing period, leaves can be sprayed with water, but this may cause the white powder to fall off, making the plant less attractive.

In winter, if the temperature can be maintained above 0 degrees, water can be provided. Below 0 degrees, watering should be stopped to prevent frostbite. Although it is cold in winter, the plant is not left without any water throughout the season; a small amount of water is provided at the base of the plant at appropriate times. Avoid spraying or giving too much water, as prolonged moisture in the leaf heart can cause rot. After the temperature rises in spring, normal watering can be gradually resumed.

Echeveria peacockii is a very easy-to-grow variety. Apart from needing some shade in summer, it can be exposed to full sunlight in other seasons. The author uses a mixture of peat, coal cinders, and river sand for the soil, with clean river sand spread on the surface, focusing on soil permeability.
