The most common saying when browsing forums is that to raise succulents, you should water less and water thoroughly. I will explain the purpose of doing this. Succulents are actually lazy guys, and they grow roots slowly in a humid environment (the roots I am referring to here are fibrous roots, which are very thin and white, and this is also the reason why plants need some time to adapt after being planted, because the plants you buy usually only have main roots, and the fibrous roots are usually damaged. The main roots actually do not absorb nutrients, mainly relying on fibrous roots, but having main roots can help grow fibrous roots faster and better, which is the relationship between the two), and in a water-deficient environment, the leaves shrink, causing an increase in hormone concentration, and fibrous roots will grow in large numbers. You can experiment with this: long-term water-deficient plants have a very large number of fibrous roots. Therefore, if you want succulents to grow good roots, water deficiency has a certain effect.
Next, let's talk about how to judge when to water succulents. My personal method is to touch the leaves, usually in the following three situations:
1. The leaves in the lower circle are soft and shriveled (not the leaves that are yellowing and falling off), and the leaves in the upper circles are hard, indicating a slight lack of water. It is generally time to water. If the lower leaves are still not hard 12 hours after watering, it means that the root system is not very good, and you should extend the interval for the next round of watering to force the roots.
2. The leaves in the lower circle are soft and shriveled, and the leaves in the upper circles are also soft, indicating a severe lack of water. If the leaves do not become firm 12 hours after watering, it means one of two things: either you just planted them and they have not adapted yet, in which case you should put the plant in a well-ventilated area and dry the soil as soon as possible, or your plant has been planted for a long time and you notice this situation, indicating that your plant is 90% rotten roots and quite severe, so I suggest you pull it out, repair the roots, and grow new roots.
3. The plant is in a wrapped state, with the outer circle dried up, circle by circle inward, while the inner leaves are firm and vigorous, indicating that the plant is in a dormant state. Please do not water.
