The cultivation of Rongjin

This article provides an overview of the topic of growing Rongjin at home, including its cultivation methods, as detailed below:

There is some information available online about the cultivation of Rongjin, but many gardening enthusiasts prefer to read about others' experiences. This article is a gardening enthusiast's experience with caring for Rongjin, which offers great reference value for others looking to care for the plant!

Rongjin is a succulent plant of the Portulacaceae family, belonging to the genus Osteospermum. It is a perennial herb with tuberous roots and has flowers in white and red. Native to the desert regions of South Africa and Namibia, it thrives in cool, dry, and sunny environments, is drought-resistant, but dislikes waterlogging and humid heat, and is somewhat cold-tolerant.

The above information was found by the author online. Whether Rongjin is a summer or winter type plant can be determined more accurately by temperature. In its native habitat, it is hot and dry in the summer and warm and rainy in the winter. The so-called "rainy" is relative to its summer conditions and not comparable to China's climate. Rongjin's optimal growing temperature is around 17°C-25°C. If the temperature is too high, it will enter dormancy. In the north (the author is in Shijiazhuang), it grows well on a balcony with air conditioning during the summer when temperatures often reach 38°C. In the winter, due to heating, it does not completely stop watering (balcony temperature is about 21°C), but the watering frequency is reduced due to poor ventilation from closed windows, usually watering only when the soil is completely dry, but not thoroughly.

Regarding potting mix, those with means can use pure red jade soil. I use a mixture of coarse sand, peat, and small stones, in a ratio of about 3:1:1. The main principle is to ensure good drainage and not retain too much water. I have compared pure red jade soil with my own mixture, and the results are similar.

As for sunlight, Rongjin enjoys basking in the sun. However, during the midsummer and early autumn, remember to shade it to prevent sunburn (I once had two plants, one with a sunburned tuber and one with dried leaves) – it's hard to imagine that this desert plant is susceptible to sunburn.

Regarding ventilation, it can be summed up in three words: very important. Especially in the summer, if there is excessive watering without proper ventilation and strong sun exposure, it is almost certain to die. Remember that Rongjin prefers a dry and cool growing environment.

Lastly, there are a few details to note: 1. The pot for growing Rongjin should not be too deep, as the soil dries slowly. 2. New Rongjin plants may appear dry, with grayish-white leaves, so they should be planted in dry soil and watered gradually after about a month. Once new roots have grown, water generously (I once killed a large Rongjin plant, about 15 cm tall, by overwatering and cried for several days). 3. Avoid direct sunlight unless it is constantly kept outdoors.

The above are some of my own experiences, for reference only. Any similarities are purely coincidental. I hope that gardening enthusiasts who love Rongjin can successfully care for their beloved plants!

The above introduction to the cultivation of Rongjin (experience sharing) is provided for green plant enthusiasts as a reference, and it is hoped that it can help solve your problems in green plant and flower management.
