Wide-leaf Spring Grass Sowing

An article on green plant knowledge, introducing the propagation of wide-leaf spring grass, sowing wide-leaf spring grass, followed by a comprehensive introduction.

Sowing is a major method of propagating wide-leaf spring grass. Many flower enthusiasts buy seeds at high prices for sowing wide-leaf spring grass. Generally, sowing wide-leaf spring grass is suitable in autumn, as spring grass is suitable for low-temperature sowing. Therefore, sowing can begin when the average temperature is around 25°C.

Reference: "Sowing wide-leaf spring grass in autumn, cover with a thin layer of soil after sowing, and place a glass plate on top to keep the soil and air moist, which has a high germination rate. To prevent seeds or seedlings from being washed out of the soil during watering, the immersion pot method can be adopted, allowing water to slowly moisten the soil from the bottom drainage holes of the flower pot."

Let's take a look at the specific process of sowing wide-leaf spring grass (combined with the sowing records from Flower Friend Kite's Garden).

There is nothing special about the sowing medium, any medium suitable for succulents can be used, including disinfection and watering can refer to the methods for sowing succulents.

Kite's medium scheme is a combination of bottom and top layers. The bottom soil consists of: coal slag, peat, and perlite, in a ratio of 6:3:1. After mixing the soil, add furadan and carbendazim powder to prevent insect infestations and bacterial infections. As the germination period of spring grass seeds is relatively long, about 10 to 40 days, leave a little more than 1 cm of space, then cover with clean river sand 0.5 to 1.2 mm thick and soak the potting soil thoroughly.

Seed treatment: To improve germination rate, wide-leaf spring grass seeds can be soaked in gibberellin, which is not a necessary process. Take a small amount of gibberellin, about the size of a mung bean, dilute it with alcohol, as it is a crystalline solid.

It should be specifically mentioned here that gibberellin can stimulate plant cell growth and break the dormancy of seeds and tubers, promoting seed germination. The concentration should not be too high. A small packet of this can be used for a long time. For seeds that are difficult to germinate, it can be used to promote germination. After dissolving, there will still be some crystals left, which is not a problem. Add a little water, and place the spring grass seeds in it. Since the seeds have a protective membrane, stir well to ensure they are fully soaked. The soaking time is 2 hours. After 2 hours, use tweezers to place each seed individually in a pre-prepared seedling tray.

Sowing is very simple. First, make a small indentation on the surface of the soaked river sand with something, enough to place the seeds, then use tweezers to place each seed into the indentation without covering.

Then, cover it with a layer of protective film and wait for germination, such as a seedling box lid, plastic wrap, etc. Occasionally open the box lid for ventilation and check the moisture loss. If there is a lack of water, replenish it in time. Germination usually starts around 8 days, but you need to be patient as the germination time is long, and later on, some seeds may still germinate. Do not try to remove the shell from the seedlings, as it is easy to kill them; they will naturally fall off. The seedlings in the photo are half a year old.
