Blind branches in Chinese roses are something many rose enthusiasts do not want to see. Even after proper fertilization and watering, Chinese roses may produce few buds and many blind branches due to poor growth, usually caused by the following reasons:
1. Failure to repot in time
Chinese roses have a high growth rate and produce many flowers, requiring ample nutrients during the growing period. After a period of growth, not only are the roots full within the pot, but the soil becomes compacted and the nutrients in the soil are depleted. Therefore, it is generally recommended to repot once every 1-2 years before the early spring sprouting, cutting off some old roots and replacing them with loose and fertile new soil to ensure normal blooming of Chinese roses.
2. Lack of proper pruning
Chinese roses only bloom on robust branches grown in the current year, and strong pruning in winter is one of the keys to ensuring robust sprouts. Pruning is usually done in late December, removing diseased and weak branches, as well as crossed branches, leaving 3-4 robust branches from the current year with 3-4 buds at the base and cutting off the upper part. In spring, remove inward-facing branches and weak ones to allow the remaining branches to concentrate nutrients for growth and flowering. During the flowering period, after the flowers fade, promptly cut off the remaining flowers and the 2-3 leaves below, as well as dense branches and weak ones below, to facilitate ventilation and light, and promote the development of cut bud sprouts for flowering.
3. Insufficient light
Chinese roses enjoy ample sunlight. When overcast, the plant's growth becomes weak, blind branches increase, and the number of flowers decreases.
