What needs attention is that this pruning in autumn must be light, as improper pruning can prevent the second batch of autumn flowers from blooming.
So how should we prune roses after the autumn flowers?
Rose pruning after autumn flowers is very simple, just cut off the残花 (withered flowers) is enough.
Those who have read the article about pruning roses after spring flowers should remember that in spring, some branches should be cut back.
But in autumn, there is no need to cut back branches. After the autumn flowers, just cut off the残花. Why is there this difference?
In autumn, as the temperature gradually drops, if the branches are cut back, it will lead to delayed sprouting of new rose buds, extending the blooming time, and it is likely that due to low temperatures, the second batch of autumn flowers will not bloom.
While in the case of only pruning the残花, the two bud points at the top will quickly sprout and bloom.
You might ask: Can these buds, which are not full enough, bloom?
As the saying goes, something is better than nothing. It's better than over-pruning in pursuit of large flowers, which causes them not to bloom.
If the flower buds grow but cannot bloom due to low temperatures, it would be a waste of nutrients, and it is better to let them bloom. Even if they are not standard, they still have some ornamental value.
