So, we need to remove the weak top bud and let the nutrients flow back to the bottom bud, allowing it to grow robustly. This is the first type of bud to remove.
2. Bud points
The second type of bud to remove promptly is when more than one new bud sprouts from the same bud point, like here where there are three buds. We should keep the relatively stronger one, as it is stronger compared to the other two.
If the other two buds are not removed, they will also struggle to grow strong, and they will compete with the strong bud for nutrients, leading to poor growth of the previously strong bud. So, removing these two buds is enough.
3. Buds to observe
Then, which type of bud should not be removed in a hurry? It's like the buds growing towards the base. We should not remove these buds first as they may later grow into intersecting or overlapping branches.
But right now, they are just starting to grow, and the leaves they produce can still perform photosynthesis. Moreover, we cannot predict for sure that they will grow into overlapping branches.
